I believe music can preserve memories, inspire hope, and connect people beyond language and borders. Every piece I write begins with that belief.
I am Alex Syedin, a Ukrainian-born composer, pianist, conductor, arranger and bassoonist. My music is rooted in the classical tradition while embracing the emotional storytelling of cinematic music. Whether I am composing, performing or conducting, my goal is always the same: to create music that speaks honestly and stays with people long after the last note.
I earned both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Ukrainian National Tchaikovsky Academy of Music. During my studies, I was honored to receive several international awards, including First Prize at the Kharkiv Assemblies International Competition and the Grand Prix at the 21st Century Art International Competition.
I spent many years performing as an orchestral musician served as Principal Bassoon with the Kyiv Municipal Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre for Children and Youth and later as Second Bassoon with the National Opera of Ukraine. Alongside my orchestral career, I worked as a conductor and arranger with outstanding musicians, including pianist Evgeny Khmara on his Wheel of Life concert tour and pianist Yaroslav Oliinyk on the productions Time of Change and Grand Rock Piano Show.
Film music has also played an important role in my artistic journey. As part of composer Hossein Mirzagholi’s creative team, I contributed arrangements to the feature films Carol of the Bells, Diagnosis: Dissent and then conducted the orchestra during the recording sessions. Later, I composed the original score for the documentary My Refugee, directed by Dmitri Galitzine, which tells the stories of Ukrainian refugees rebuilding their lives in Great Britain after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Working on this film was deeply personal, as its stories reflected emotions that many people, including myself, have experienced.
In recent years, I have devoted most of my creative energy to my own music.
My debut piano album, Out of Homeland, was born during one of the most difficult periods of my life. It reflects the experience of leaving home, holding on to memories, finding inner strength, and believing that hope can survive even in the darkest moments.
My second album, Universe from the Earth, explores a different perspective. It invites listeners to slow down, look at the world with curiosity, and reflect on our place within nature and the universe.
I also enjoy collaborating with other artists. Together with violinist and composer Julia Kucherenko, I co-created the original works Between and Ave Maria. These collaborations remind me that music is, at its heart, a conversation — one that often says more than words ever could.
Today I continue to compose, perform, and collaborate with musicians from different backgrounds. Every project brings new experiences, every performance creates new connections, and every composition becomes another opportunity to tell a story that words cannot fully express.
Looking ahead, I hope to continue writing music for piano, chamber ensembles, orchestra and film, while sharing it with audiences around the world.
One of my greatest dreams is for my music to have a life beyond my own performances. That is why I prepare and publish the sheet music for every composition I release. I hope other musicians will discover these works, interpret them in their own way, and make them part of their own artistic journey.
To me, this is one of the most meaningful things a composer can hope for — that the music continues to live, grow, and connect people long after it has been written.
